Thanksgiving is here and we couldn’t be more excited about it. We all know about the importance of enjoying and sharing food with our loved ones, cooking together, sharing a family recipe, but what if we told you, there are healthier versions of your holiday favorites?

That’s right, you can have that comforting plate of cranberry sauce, turkey and mashed potatoes with extra nutrition, because you can still take care of your health while enjoying the holidays. For this class, we will teach you how to make a healthier version of the traditional mashed potatoes which contain large amounts of butter, cream and added fats with a lighter yet still fluffy recipe using the most versatile, diet friendly vegetable, cauliflower!

Cauliflower has a lot of health benefits containing several nutrients while being low in calories. It is also high in fiber with 3 grams of fiber in one cup reducing bacteria, promoting digestive health, and lowering the risk of illnesses including heart disease, cancer and diabetes. Fiber is also beneficial for weight loss by promoting fullness and reducing overall calorie intake. This vegetable is also high in glucosinolates, isothiocyanates, carotenoid and flavonoid antioxidants protective inflammation and harmful free radicals. We use this healthy low carb alternative to replace potatoes, lowering carb content without sacrificing flavor, fluffiness resulting in a rich, buttery side.

It’s turkey time, the main star of the show and the main source of protein, niacin, vitamin B6 and tryptothan. It is also a great source of selenium which benefits thyroid hormone metabolism, immune function and antioxidant defense systems. Containing tryptothan, it aids improving mood and strengthening your immune system. It is also a low glycemic food, it won’t cause the blood sugar to spike helping you keep blood sugar under control and boosting levels of “good” HDL cholesterol increasing your heart health.

To boost the turkey’s flavor, we prepared a cranberry sauce, lower in sugar than those store bought cans while also having more flavor and the adequate consistency. Cranberries not only are a great sweet contrasting topping but they are also a high nutrient and antioxidant food. This bright red fruit contains polyphenols that may reduce the risk of Cardiovascular Disease and manage blood pressure as well as improving levels of HDL lipoprotein and reducing inflammation.
