There is something about street food that makes it a fun experience, for this class we will be recreating a dish and a dessert that are typical of Asian street food and go perfectly paired with having a good time surrounded by friends and family. Both recipes combine flavor in a unique way that will make your taste buds go crazy in the best possible way.

We will start by preparing a Vegetable Chaat, vegetables have never tasted so good! Chaat means “to lick”, the dish is so delicious people licked their bowl and fingers and it ended up getting this name. It is composed of a variety of flavorful vegetables thanks to the several spices that are used. The primary source of protein, lentils make this dish even more filling and full of fiber (32% of the recommended daily need). Lentils lower cholesterol and protect against diabetes and colon cancer, while also rich in potassium, iron and folate supporting heart health, lowering blood pressure and forming red blood cells.

The creamy consistency comes from the potatoes, full of fiber and contributing to the satiety level you feel after eating this meal. Potatoes are heart healthy; they keep cholesterol and blood sugar levels in healthy ranges, and they provide a boost of antioxidants that prevent disease. The pop of red color comes from fresh tomatoes, a fruit that is a great source of vitamin C, potassium, folate and vitamin K. Cucumber adds even more freshness with 95% water and low in calories, they contain phytonutrients called lignans. A key ingredient for this Chaat is ginger, not only does it elevate the flavor and spice, but it also boosts your health. Ginger fights germs and is antibacterial, is anti-inflammatory, contains bioactive molecules that may slow some types of cancer and lowers blood sugar. Cumin powder gives it a stronger taste, contains antioxidants, has anticancer properties, may help treat diarrhea, and is also anti-inflammatory. Cinnamon has antiviral and antibacterial properties, antioxidants and has anti-inflammatory effects while containing prebiotics that improve gut health.

The last part of this dish, the garnish doesn’t fail to be part of the gut healing, anti-inflammatory properties of this recipe, using yogurt to finalize it which contain live bacteria or probiotics that promote digestive health and strengthen your immune system. There is no doubt this recipe will make your taste buds and gut happy!

Dessert is not left out of the food party, this Taiwanese Ice Cream Burrito is a unique, fun way to expand your flavor palette and experiment trying new contrasts and textures. It features a base of a crepe topped with creamy Ice Cream, a crunchy sweet peanut brittle sprinkled on top and a garnish of cilantro that ties everything together. This is the perfect way to dive into new recipes that are out of your comfort zone, bonus points if you make it with a friend!
