Sometimes we reach a point where things get busy and we feel as if the only option is to go through the drive thru and grab the quickest and easiest thing on the menu. But have no fear! Our upcoming class, Fixing Fast Food, is all about beating those cravings with recipes that will not leave you feeling guilty!
First, our students will be learning how to make Sweet Potato Fries from scratch! Instead of deep-frying the potatoes in oil, these are dusted with delicious spices and baked until they are crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. You may already know that sweet potatoes are packed with vitamin A, which promotes healthy eyesight and immune function. One lesser known fact about this powerful vegetable is that it contains magnesium that helps to calm the nerves and promote relaxation (which we can all use a little more of right about now!). Students will have the opportunity to customize their fries by creating their own spice mix to go on top!
Hamburgers are one of the most popular fast food items but also can be one of the unhealthiest. We have created our own burger, but this one is a little bit different because it’s meatless! Chickpeas, quinoa and broccoli are combined with spices to create a one-of-a-kind patty without the extra fat and calories of a regular burger. Chickpeas have protein and fiber; protein will keep you feeling full while the fiber will help control blood sugar levels! These patties can be put between a whole wheat bun or butter lettuce.
Finally, to wash it all down, we will be mixing up our own Cookies and Cream Milkshake! This one is a little bit different because instead of using ice cream, we use almond milk and yogurt to give it the thick texture of a delicious shake. Bananas are added to the mix for creaminess and they also provide potassium, which helps maintain normal blood pressure. You won’t want to go back to your normal drive-thru shakes after knowing how to make your own!
Our Fixing Fast Food class is happening on Tuesday, April 4th at 5:15 pm in the Outdoor Adventures building of the UA Rec Center. Hope to see you there!
